Messages From Happy Silca System Customers

Dear Silca System,

Your Silca grates allowed me to do “the impossible.” I promised my mom if she would agree to having siding put on her house, I would fly home and build her a new front porch. A few little problems with my offer: I live in California, my mom lives in Texas, I’m a petite woman and would be the solo person on the project, and the work had to be started and completed in seven days, including shopping for and hauling supplies. At the end of Day 7, I had to be on a plane back to California. To be honest, about three days before I left for Texas, I was panicking, certain I was about to spend a lot of money on a project that would become an unfinished, embarrassing eyesore.

Then with two days to go, I stumbled upon a website which featured Silca grates. Talk about sweet serendipity! I began to breathe again. My panic was replaced by planning, calculating, envisioning. Because of time and money constraints, my porch design had become less of a porch and more of a small deck, using Bisons as footings. Finding even two planks that are straight, not bowed, is hard-to-do; finding enough for a small deck could take a full day of driving all over north Texas. Now, if I could get the Silca grates in time and they lived up to my hopes, the only wood needed for the porch would be for the joist beams. That alone would buy me an enormous amount of time! Less wood would mean less loading, hauling, unloading, sawing, attaching, and painting with wood protector. Plus with Silca grates, I didn’t have to worry about future problems and costs because of termites, rotting, or the effects over time of north Texas summer heat and winter freezes. Plus, as my “topper,” the option of paving stones re-entered the realm of possibilities. Previously I had ruled out pavers because there wasn’t enough time or budget for the significant concrete foundation which pavers require. My despair turned to anticipation. “If the Silcas work the way I hope they will…” was an element of every decision.

With my fingers crossed, I tracked down a Silca vendor and, while still in California, placed the order and had them shipped to Mom’s house. If promises were met, the grates would arrive two days after I did in Texas. On Day 1, I did my measuring and shopping. On Day 2 it rained. On Day 3 my Silca grates arrived while I was building my joist foundation, and by sundown, I had my grates in place and attached. Tools required: an electric jigsaw to cut the grates for the end pieces (I used the type of blade sold for cutting laminated wood flooring) and an electric drill and screws to attach the grates to the joists.

This gave me FOUR DAYS to build railings and lay paving “stones.” Mom and I opted for “brick” pavers made from recycled rubber tires — more manageable for a woman to haul, carry, and place plus safer in case of a fall and less slippery in inclement weather. Late on Day 7- THANKS TO SILCA GRATES! – my mom had a finished new porch and I was headed home to California.

The only problem I found in using the Silca grates was the “male curiosity factor.” Men would drive past, slow down, back up, park, and walk over to see what I was doing. It wasn’t a “girl” thing, it was a “girl doing construction” thing. None of the guys had ever seen Silca grates, and everyone had questions. Where did I find them? How did I get them to this small, rural town? Cost? Load? Etc. Normally, I would have enjoyed this, but not on a tight deadline. It’s pretty fair to say no one was betting I could finish, even my mom. But at the end of Day 7, I was on a plane feeling very productive, and my Mom was sitting in a rocker on her new porch.

“Grateful” is the appropriate word for how I feel about Silca grates! You made the impossible possible. Thank you, Silca Grates! Your fan

” I just wanted to drop you this note to let you know how satisfied we are with our new deck. We were reluctant to resurface our existing 6 foot tall wood deck, yet another time; you know all the maintenance of staining. The Silca System®substructure and Travertine was an answer to the ongoing upkeep problems we had with our old wood deck. The Silca Grate™ was very simple to install, and I did it myself with the help of 2 of my children, ages 12 and 14. We weren’t sure how strong the plastic would be, at first, but are very satisfied with how solid our deck is when we walk on it. Our friends and family have all been surprised to see the Travertine on our deck! It is much more attractive, and there is no threat of splinters, like the old wood deck. The Silca System® has exceeded our expectations and I would suggest your product to anyone looking to install or replace a deck. “

“The decision to use Silca System® for our new deck was an easy one. We wanted a unique, low maintenance deck but found composite decking far too expensive. Fortunately, we discovered Silca System® via an Internet search for “decking alternatives”. Bart and his staff answered all of our questions and really put us at ease. They worked with us to design the deck of our dreams and they assisted us throughout the construction process. Looking back at our decision to partner with Silca System® and more importantly looking out over our new deck, we obviously made the right choice. I would highly recommend them to anyone interested in an easy to care for decking solution that is both cost effective and distinctive.”
